United Christian Missions, Inc.
provides the
Educate a Child sponsorship program. It enables needy
children to receive an education and spiritual training.
The ability to
receive an education is a prized possession. Illiteracy and lack of
education continues to depress the Nicaraguan society. The government
is making strides but the need is overwhelming.
By most
estimates the majority of the children are unable to go to school
past the sixth grade. Many cannot attend school because they
have to help support the family. Many cannot attend school at any age
because they cannot afford the required uniforms.
It is typical in
a Third World country, for the government to require students in both
public and private schools to wear uniforms. The reason for requiring
this is to remove economic and class distinctions for students. The
problem is that many families cannot afford the price of the
uniforms, making education only a dream.
The pastors and
churches identify the children who cannot afford to go to school. An
Educate a Child sponsorship of $180 per year provides the
following:
3 white shirts
3 blue pants or skirts
6 pairs of socks
2 pairs of shoes
1 backpack
various school supplies
pens and pencils
Bible
Dictionary
2 hours of weekly spiritual
training, support and encouragement through a local Christian
church.
Training on administering the Educate a Child ministry for the
pastor and church leaders who implement it in their church.
Educate A Child
sponsors receive a photograph and data sheet on the child whose life
is being impacted.
The Educate A
Child program helps break the cycle of poverty, elevates a child’s
self-esteem, benefits the whole family, strengthens the church and
most importantly strengthens a child’s faith in our caring, loving
God. A UCM Educate A Child Field Coordinator provides guidance
and support for child, family and church.
Jesus said,
“Whosoever welcomes one of these little children welcomes me.”
Mark 9: 37.
